The well-known story of the Benetton
group has developed during the course of the last thirty years, and still centres on the
green Veneto countryside near Treviso, in two main facilities: Paderno di Ponzano and Castrette
di Villorba. Based on the capacity to identify strategic factors of growth and
innovation this involved the construction and transformation of an entire series of
buildings. The protagonists of this wide range of design assignments have been the
architects Afra and Tibia Scarpa, internationally renowned for their
refined talent as industrial designers. «For this factory -the designers explain-we have
adopted a system of strong impact, like the stayed structure, that fulfils many functions:
the expressive and visual element, the lightening of the volume in the landscape, the
attempt to be competitive with extreme, seldom used structures, and maximum availability
of internal space, which Is left completely open, in keeping with new ways of working».
